Lehi mother/son duo tear up the track together

GRANTSVILLE — Mothers and sons bond over myriad moments. Melanie and Madison Snow just happen to bond at the moment they’re both going over 140 mph.

The Lehi duo isn’t uncommon as a race family. Successful race families like father/son Dale and Dale Earnhardt Jr., father/son Mario and Michael and brothers Kyle and Kurt Busch are relatively commonplace.

But mother Melanie and son Madison are a little different. For starters, mother Melanie is a bit of an anomaly in a male-dominated sport. Oh, and Madison isn’t even old enough to have a drivers license yet. (more…)

2011 Volkswagen Touareg: An SUV with a new pitch, and a hitch

The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI requires us to understand our dimension of assessment.

That is to say, what direction are we looking in?

It’s economical. That’s true. (more…)

2011 Nissan Murano: The fairer way to drive a crossover

Credit where credit is due.

In the list of carmakers that have taken risks over the past 10 years, Nissan not only takes the crown — they dominate the conversation.

Take, for instance, the Nissan GT-R.

Then the Nissan Juke.

Then the Nissan Cube.

(Just make sure your eyes are closed for the last one.) (more…)

2011 Moab Easter Jeep Safari: Part 2

MOAB — I know as much about off-roading as I do about Hankel Functions.

I can observe the numbers in a Hankel Function in the same way that I can observe the rocks in front of the 2010 Ram Power Wagon. What to do with the rocks and the numbers, that’s up to God and people smarter than I am.

Jeep, Ram — and I guess Chrysler by extension — invited us down to Moab last week to taste what Easter Jeepsters have known since the 1970s: spectacular sports begin with a dare. As in, “I bet you your wife will leave you quicker if you go up that sheer cliff face in the family Jeep.” (more…)

2011 Range Rover Sport: Off-road opulence

DENVER — What’s not to like about a car that keeps your Acqua Panna cool, protects your perfectly sculpted quaff and shuttles your designer jeans around a suburban slalom course of shopping mall, chic eatery, overpriced grocery store and back to the McMansion again?

Money doesn’t buy happiness, but I’ll cry my eyes out in a 2011 Range Rover any day.

These domestic duties, of course, are all we’ll ever use them for. (more…)

2011 Dodge Avenger: New flavor emerges in mid-sized segment

Nothing can ever be everything to everybody.

Take, for instance, pistachio ice cream.

It’s a little bit sweet, a little bit savory and a whole lot gross. If pistachio ice cream becomes popular again (I hear it was big in, like, the 1930s or something) I’ll liquefy, freeze and eat my shoe.

But that’s precisely what the D segment of the car industry tries to be: everything to everyone. (more…)

2011 Dodge Durango: Dead-eye Dodge aims for SUV market

The 2011 Dodge Durango’s crosshair grille would be better suited on top of a gun barrel.

That is to say that the 7-seater, crossover-SUV-whatchamacallit is not only a sniper shot across the segment’s collective noses — but also up it.

Resurrecting the Durango name from a two-year slumber was visibly no easy task. The Dodge hauler emerged in the late 1990s with a sturdy, curvy SUV alternative for SUVs that were growing faster than the national debt. Since the Durango name fell dormant in 2008, gas prices have fluctuated worse than Tiger Woods’ swing — more than even the stock markets. The last time we had a Durango, we grounded flights over Swine Flu. (more…)

2011 Saab 9-5 Turbo4: The stuff of genius

Former Secretary of Defense and Ford chief (for about two days) Robert McNamara tells a story about the emergence of one of the most popular cars on the planet.

McNamara said he knew the Volkswagen Beetle would be a hit in the states when he saw who drove the little coupe in its early days. College professors, intellectuals — the types that wear patches on the elbows of their tweed jackets — were all early adopters of the VW bug. (more…)

2011 Buick Regal Turbo: Welcome (back) to America

I’d like to believe that there’s a car out there for everyone.

Having said that, I’d be interested to meet the person who personifies best with a 2011 Buick Regal Turbo.

Mating cars with their owners is one of the easier games to play on long road trips. Minivan? Inhabited by two carbon-based life forms who answered nature’s call to reproduce between 3 to 5 times — most likely two years apart. (more…)

2011 Toyota Prius: Gas prices on the rise puts capable Prius back in the driver’s seat

At this very moment, gas prices are rising faster than Lindsay Lohan’s jail term. In fact, just yesterday on my way to work I witnessed three oil executives ordering new Gulfstreams on stretch pay — rather than paying just cash.

These are truly desperate times.

The bad news continues: OPEC nations are about as stable as Charlie Sheen. And oil, like Charlie Sheen too, is something that God just isn’t making any more of. (more…)
